The university says total enrollment for its summer courses, which began May 12, is up 22% compared to last summer and marks the highest it has seen since 2016.
IU says overall, 33,201 students enrolled in online courses offered through IU’s campuses across Indiana, nearly 6% more than last summer when 31,443 students were enrolled in both remote learning and in-person classes.
“IU’s summer enrollment figures show our prioritization of student success even as we confront the unprecedented circumstances surrounding the coronavirus pandemic,” said John Applegate, executive vice president for university academic affairs.
The university says the stats represent the strength of the IU online program as well as the unprecedented challenges the pandemic has posed on students.
Applegate said, “Each year we have seen continued interest in the robust offering of degree programs and high-quality courses offered through our IU Online program, and we are grateful that we are able to extend such an excellent IU education to our students in a remote learning environment.”
From across IU’s seven campuses, the university says it saw a total increase in enrollment:
- 12,604 students at IU Bloomington
- 11,493 at IUPUI
- 2,143 at IU East
- 1,155 at IU Kokomo
- 1,730 at IU Northwest
- 1,841 at IU South Bend
- 2,235 at IU Southeast
Additionally, IU says the total number of credit hours for all students enrolled in summer 2020 increased by 9% from 2019, and the total number of degree-seeking undergraduates in summer 2020 is up by nearly 9% from 2019.
