In his new role, which will encompass IU’s entire statewide network, Welch will be responsible for leveraging the university’s "operational and research strengths in combination to address challenges faced across the nation."
Welch currently serves as director of the IU Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research, a role in which he will continue in addition to the new position. IU says Welch will report directly to Vice President for Research Fred Cate and Vice President for Information Technology Brad Wheeler.
"For almost 20 years, IU has methodically grown our operational, development and research capacities for cybersecurity as an innovative partner," Wheeler said in a news release. "Von’s proven leadership of many relationships and multimillion-dollar partnerships make this the right time to appoint a university-wide executive director for cybersecurity innovation."
Welch says the enhanced role for the CACR is a reflection of the center’s staff and track record of success.
