During his time at the helm, Shanahan oversaw the merging of three academic units into one comprehensive, media-related research and teaching program.
IU says an interim dean will be announced at a later date.
Shanahan came to IU in 2015 from Boston University to oversee the media school, which brought together the former School of Journalism, the Department of Telecommunications and the film component of the Department of Communication and Culture.
Shanahan is a mass media effects researcher with a special interest in communication-related to science and the environment.
