The health system says the flagship hospital will sit on a 44-acre expansion of IU’s current campus on the south side of 16th street.
IU Health first announced plans in August 2020 for the new health complex in downtown Indy that will result in the consolidation of its two existing adult hospitals.
Crews have been working for months on relocating infrastructure, including underground utilities. Excavation work will begin next week.
“The new downtown hospital will become an iconic addition to the Indianapolis skyline, representing hope and healing for future generations,” said James Mladucky, vice president of design and construction for IU Health. “Significant in scale and stature, it is designed foremost as a destination for patients, offering leading-edge medicine in a flexible facility that can be reconfigured over time to accommodate advances in medical care and changing patient demand.”
The plans provide options for the towers to be 14 or 16 floors. There would be up to 672 private patient rooms.
The health system says both current hospitals will remain open until the new hospital opens in four to five years. The system says combining operations will make IU Health more cost-efficient and eliminate duplication of services.
