IU Adding Cybersecurity Masters

Subscribe NowIndiana University will this fall launch a Master of Science in cybersecurity risk management degree. The school says the program will focus on policy, legal and ethical cybersecurity issues faced in several industries.
The university says the degree will draw on faculty from IU’s Kelley School of business, Maurer School of Law and School of Informatics and Computing. Associate Professor of Business Law and Ethics Scott Shackelford will chair the degree program.
"If you speak with policymakers and technical specialists about cybersecurity, they often speak about similar problems but use totally different languages," says Shackelford. "Until we start to bring them together, under the umbrella of risk management, that confusion will be another challenge adding to an already daunting problem,"
The degree will be delivered in a hybrid online format. IU Vice President For Research Fred Cate says it is designed to address "the frequent demand we hear from employers for graduates with broad, practical training in cybersecurity."
The program will include in-residence weeks in Washington D.C. and IU Bloomington, allowing students to hear from cybersecurity professionals from companies and federal agencies. It will also include an immersive capstone consulting experience to help students become more familiar with the National Institute for Standards and Technology Cybersecurity Framework, which is a baseline of best practices that is increasingly influencing decision-making.
The school says the 30-credit-hour program is designed for recent graduates as well as mid-career professionals. The deadline to apply is May 15 for U.S. students, and April 1 for international students.
