The project will revitalize Krannert Park’s 50-year-old family center facility, and will include a new swimming pool, an outdoor splash pad, water play features, fitness room, indoor track, and heating and cooling improvements.
“This fifty-year-old park is a part of the fabric of the far-westside. But over the last several years, it has not been fully usable,” said Hogsett, noting the ongoing repairs and closures to the park’s two pools. “A big part of Krannert Park’s future will be the joining of the indoor and outdoor pools—creating a year-round opportunity to swim. But for anyone who’s looked at the renderings, they know there’s a lot more in store.”
The initiative is funding a total of $45 million to four park projects. Frederick Douglass Park & Family Center was awarded $20 million for upgrades, and Riverside, Krannert and Grassy Creek Parks were awarded a combined $25 million for improvements.
“Whenever Indy Parks gets the chance to invest in our park spaces, we make sure all the pieces are in place to do it right,” said Phyllis Boyd, Indy Parks director. “As a parks department, it continues to be a joy to reimagine parks in such a way that really reshapes park spaces to benefit, inspire, and encourage the people we serve.”
The center is expected to reopen in the fall of 2023. During construction, visitors will still be able to access Krannert’s 2.5-acre pond, walking trails, sports fields, and outdoor basketball court.
