(NYSE: T) is today launching "5G Evolution" service in parts of Indianapolis, making it the second market for the company’s newest high-speed internet service. AT&T Indiana President Bill Soards says the move is another step to creating a wider network that can accommodate autonomous vehicles, the Internet of Things and related technology. At a launch event in downtown Indianapolis, Mayor Joe Hogsett called wireless technology advancement "a crucial piece of the economic development puzzle."
Soards says Indianapolis is an ideal early market for its 5G Evolution service. He says the city’s growing tech scene, regulatory environment and "rich portfolio of radio spectrum" makes the market attractive for the company. AT&T is hoping to roll out the service in 20 metro areas.
"It’s no accident that Indiana was chosen for this latest 5G Evolution news," said TechPoint Chief Executive Officer Mike Langellier. "Indianapolis is one of the nation’s fastest growing midsize city tech hubs; rapidly creating jobs, attracting talent and launching new ventures. Strong infrastructure yielding these ultra-fast speeds from AT&T is an important ingredient for powering tech innovation in Indiana."
AT&T says it has also launched a new Distributed Antenna System over the past year, which it says adds network capacity to nine existing systems in the city to serve customers at venues including airports, stadiums and malls. The company says the move is part of a more than $350 million investment in its Indianapolis wireless and wired networks over the last three years.
The company has already launched the 5G Evolution service in Austin, Texas and has announced plans for Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Nashville and San Francisco.
