In its most recent service update, the authority also made the case for the need for a Trans-Atlantic air carrier and outlined what it is doing to address that need.
The organization is reporting record months in April, June, September and October. It says, in the year ended in June 2016, passenger traffic grew 12 percent compared to the previous year.
Part of the increase is due to increased destination options. The airport is reporting a 23 percent increase in nonstop destinations since 2014. The IAA says the airport added 12 percent capacity over 2015 and reported low cost carriers added 23 percent capacity over 2015.
In its update, the authority said its top priorities for 2016-2017 are securing a transatlantic nonstop flight and increasing domestic nonstop service to business hubs. It plans to work toward the first goal by forming an Air Service Task Force and meeting with carriers to pitch service to London.
Indianapolis International Airport has also continued to amass honors in 2016. It last month topped the U.S. domestic airport category for the third year in a row on Condé Nast Traveler’s annual Reader’s Choice Survey, and, in February, was named Best Airport in North America by Airports Council International. It has won that award five of the last six years.
