Iwama will succeed Susan Sciame-Giesecke, who is retiring at the end of the current academic year.
In his new role, Iwama will have oversight of IU’s five regional campuses and the university’s online education operation. He will begin his new position on July 1.
“I’m looking forward to building on the robust academic community we’ve nurtured at IU Northwest as I serve Indiana University in this new role,” Iwama said in a news release. “As we move forward together, I have no doubt that we can create new connections with community partners, bolster our academic programs, and expand the reach and impact of IU Online—among countless other initiatives that will further strengthen our regional campuses and online offerings.”
During his tenure as chancellor of IU Northwest, the university said Iwama helped lead a surge in regional campus grant activity and awards. In 2023, the university also saw an increase in first-year undergraduate students and the highest number of new applications and admissions in over 10 years.
IU Northwest also became the first public institution in the state to receive the U.S. Department of Education’s Hispanic Serving Institution designation.
The university said it will announce interim leadership for IU Northwest in the coming weeks, as well as details for finding a permanent successor to Iwama.
