Indiana unemployment resumes upward trend

Despite the increase, the Indiana Department of Workforce Development said Tuesday that the state added 2,100 private sector jobs last month.
Indiana’s unemployment rate has risen at least one-tenth of a percent every month since last April, with the exception of November, where it stayed flat at 4.4%.
The DWD said Indiana’s total private employment stands at 2,872,600 jobs. Indiana primarily saw job gains in the private education and health services; professional and business services; and financial activities sectors.
The state’s labor force participation rate rose one-tenth of a percent to 63.5%–higher than the national rate, which stayed flat at 62.5%. The labor force, which includes residents who are either employed or seeking employment, stands at a record of 3,451,468, according to the DWD.
The DWD said the state had 84,578 open job postings as of Dec. 27, while 24,631 continued unemployment insurance claims were filed as of the week ending Dec. 28.
The state’s unemployment rate is higher than the national rate, which fell one-tenth of a percent to 4.1%.
