Indiana unemployment hits 4% in July

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development said Friday the number of private sector jobs in the state remained unchanged.
July’s unemployment rate marked the fourth consecutive month-over-month increase.
The DWD said Indiana’s total private employment stands at 2,859,300. The state primarily saw job gains in the leisure and hospitality; trade, transportation and utilities; construction; and professional and business services sectors.
The state’s labor force participation rate rose slightly to 62.5%, which remains below the national rate of 62.7%. The labor force, which includes residents who are either employed or seeking employment, stands at 3,387,066, up nearly 9,000 from the previous month.
The DWD said the state had 93,433 open job postings as of July 16, while 20,275 continued unemployment insurance claims were filed as of the week ending July 27.
The state’s unemployment rate is lower than the national rate, which also rose two-tenths of a percent to 4.3% in July.
