Indiana unemployment continues upward trend in September

Despite the increase, the Indiana Department of Workforce Development said Tuesday that the state added a modest 800 private sector jobs last month.
September’s unemployment rate marked the sixth consecutive month-over-month increase.
The DWD said Indiana’s total private employment stands at 2,872,600 jobs. Indiana primarily saw job gains in the private education and health services; construction; trade, transportation and utilities; financial activities; and professional and business services sectors.
The state’s labor force participation rate rose three-tenths of a percent to 63%–higher than the national rate, which stayed flat at 62.7%. The labor force, which includes residents who are either employed or seeking employment, stands at a record of 3,417,810, according to the DWD.
The DWD said the state had 89,103 open job postings as of Sept. 16, while 20,383 continued unemployment insurance claims were field as of the week ending Sept. 28.
The state’s unemployment rate is higher than the national rate of 4.1%, which was down one-tenth of a percent in September.
