The new 40,000-square-foot facility replaces a former 8,000-square-foot space, which had served as Indiana State Police’s home in northwest Indiana since 1977.
Work on the lab, which serves 15 counties, began in August 2021. The regional lab provides forensic analysis of evidence used in criminal cases and became a priority following an increase in demand for such services.
The project comes as the second of a three-stage project expected to increase and modernize forensic lab services across Indiana.
“This building isn’t just for us, this state-of-the-art facility is for the community and for those who have been victims or have family members that have been victims of violent crime,” Indiana State Police Superintendent Doug Carter said in a news release. “It represents all that is the very best in law enforcement and our continuing, and unwavering partnerships with those agencies in and around the Lowell District coverage area who, too, will benefit from the services provided by our dedicated laboratory personnel.”
