Gioe most recently served as vice president of transportation at Norfolk Southern in Atlanta, Georgia.
Gioe succeeds Dewayne Swindall, who left the company on May 31 after nearly three years in the role, though a reason for his departure was not given.
Prior to joining Norfolk Southern in 2022, Gioe spent nearly 18 years with BNSF Railways in Fort Worth, Texas, beginning as a locomotive engineer and working his way up to assistant vice president of network innovation.
“As president and CEO of the INRD, Gioe will bring a strong focus on safety, service, efficiency and employee development,” the company said in a news release. “He has consistently demonstrated his ability to lead his teams to higher levels of performance through team building and communication.”
Gioe will begin his new role on Aug. 12.
The Indianapolis-based railroad company provides transportation services to customers across a 250-mile rail network serving central and southwest Indiana, as well as central Illinois.
