Plans for a $100 million center for detained immigrants awaiting deportation are off the table in Elkhart County. The Elkhart Truth reports Tennessee-based CoreCivic Inc. (NYSE: CXW) has withdrawn filings for a proposed 1,200-bed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement center. The publication reports Goshen Mayor Jeremy Stutsman and Elkhart Mayor Tim Neese have recently joined the opposition to the facility.

It would have been located near the Elkhart County Correctional Facility and the county landfill and the Elkhart Truth says the functions of 30 other centers throughout the Midwest would have been consolidated into it. CoreCivic is a more than 30-year-old real estate investment trust that bills itself as the nation’s largest owner of partnership correctional, detention and residential reentry facilities.
