How Vincennes University is celebrating the 2024 total eclipse

During next year’s total solar eclipse, the university campus will be in the path of totality with one of the longest periods of darkness in the state. To celebrate, VU is hosting a number of events for the hoards of tourists expected in the region.
“As we prepare to host captivating events during the total solar eclipse, we are embracing the extraordinary opportunity to create an atmosphere where the convergence of science and wonder make the total solar eclipse a truly unforgettable experience for all who gather on campus,” said Curt Coffman, VU College of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics Dean, in a news release.
The eclipse begins in Vincennes at 1:46 p.m.; maximum coverage starts at 3:04 p.m. and ends at 4:20 p.m.
The university’s schedule includes:
- “Experiencing Totality – The Great Total Eclipse of 2024” will be at both 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Feb. 8 in the Red Skelton Performing Arts Center, located at 20 Red Skelton Blvd.
- “The Dynamic Eclipse Broadcast Initiative” with Dr. Jonathan Mangin will be at 2:30 p.m. April 7 at Jefferson Student Union, located at 1401 N. Chestnut St.
- “Laughter Before Darkness” will occur at 4 p.m. April 7 at the Red Skelton Museum of American Comedy. Tickets are $10 per person or $25 per household.
- VU student on-campus party will be on April 8.
- The public can view the eclipse from noon to 5 p.m. April 8 on the Vincennes Campus at the Track and Field Complex. Free parking will be available.
VU students will be dismissed and university offices will close at noon April 8.
