Hoosier schools among ‘Best Colleges’ ranking

Subscribe NowU.S. News & World Report is out with its 2023-2024 Best Colleges ranking, and 10 Indiana institutions made the cut among national universities. The publication ranked 1,500 colleges and universities based on 19 factors, including graduation rates, faculty research and first-generation student graduation rates.
This year’s rankings, U.S. News said, placed a greater emphasis on social mobility and outcomes for graduating students, “demonstrating the most significant methodological change in the rankings’ history.”
Five factors previously used to determine the rankings were removed, including class size, faculty with terminal degrees, alumni giving, high school class standing, and the proportion of graduates who borrow federal loans.
The University of Notre Dame is the highest-ranked Indiana school on the National Universities ranking. The full list of Indiana representatives on the list is:

- 43. Purdue University – West Lafayette
- 73. Indiana University – Bloomington
- 201. IUPUI (tie)
- 201. Valparaiso University (tie)
- 216. Ball State University
- 280. Marian University
- 304. Oakland City University (tie)
- 304. University of Indianapolis (tie)
- 382. Indiana State University
The National Universities list is topped by Princeton University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, Stanford University, and Yale University.
Several Indiana schools were also ranked for their undergraduate business programs. The Indiana University Kelley School of Business is the highest-ranked Hoosier institution at #8.
“U.S. News’ overall No. 8 ranking of our Undergraduate Program is certainly impressive, but it is also a story of consistency and delivering high quality business education across all disciplines and fields,” Ash Soni, dean of the Kelley School, said in a statement to Inside INdiana Business, noting several of the school’s disciplines also ranked high among specialty programs, including marketing, accounting, and entrepreneurship.
“This shows that our graduates are getting an education from one of the best programs in the country, no matter what their major is,” Soni said.
The other Indiana representatives on the undergraduate business programs ranking are:

- 21. Purdue University (Daniels School of Business)
- 159. Ball State University (Miller College of Business)
- 191. Butler University (Lacy School of Business)
The publication also broke down the rankings into regional lists, including Midwest Universities, where Butler University is ranked No. 1, and Midwest Colleges, where Taylor University is tied for No. 3.
