Helen And Charles Schwab Give $25M to Notre Dame

The University of Notre Dame has received a $25 million gift for one of three new structures being constructed on the outside of Notre Dame Stadium. The gift is from Helen and investment industry magnate Charles Schwab. The facility will be named in honor of Helen’s brother, who is ND Trustee and Texas-based O’Neill Properties Ltd. Managing Partner Joe O’Neill.

O’Neill Hall, Corbett Family Hall and Duncan Student Center are the three facilities transforming the look of the fabled sports venue. Plans call for the six-story, 100,000 square-foot O’Neill Hall to be complete in August. It will house the Department of Music, the Sacred Music at Notre Dame program and hospitality space. Additional details include two rehearsal and concert halls, library, studio production lab, lecture hall, as well as classroom, organ practice and faculty office space. The first level will serve as a stadium entrance. The stadium work is part of the school’s $400 million Campus Crossroads Project.

President Rev. John Jenkins says "we are deeply grateful to Helen and Charles for their many years of support and, in particular, for this remarkable gift and what it represents for the future of music and the arts at Notre Dame. We are also truly thankful for the extraordinary leadership and support Joe O’Neill, his wife, Jan, and their entire family have provided to Notre Dame. They embody the Notre Dame spirit, and we look forward to dedicating this building named in their honor."

Joe O’Neill graduated from Notre Dame in 1967 with a degree in finance. He previously served as president of the Notre Dame Alumni Association’s board of directors. Another building on campus, O’Neill Family Hall, was paid for by a gift from the O’Neills, Schwabs and Joseph I. O’Neill Jr., Helen and Joe’s father who was also heavily involved in the university throughout his life. The O’Neills also supported a longitudinal sundial on the campus,
