Group Launches Push For Aquatic Center

Subscribe NowA grassroots initiative aimed at building a regional, full-service aquatics center in Allen County has launched the initial planning phases for the project. The Northern Indiana Aquatics Center Foundation says it is actively seeking a major donor and sponsors for the proposed facility.
The organization says the venue, proposed for southwest Allen County, could host competitive swimming and diving, lessons, fitness, adaptive aquatics and physical therapy. The group hopes for the center to become an aquatics destination, serving all of northern Indiana.
The foundation says results of a feasibility study by TSE consulting were positive, and the project has the endorsement of Southwest Allen County School District, which would lease space there for its aquatics program. Superintendent Philip Downs says using the facility instead of investing in upgrades to its current Natatorium would save money for the district and taxpayers.
According to the NIACF, the center would feature a 10-lane, 50-meter long-course competition pool, a separate diving well, a therapy pool and spectator seating for 1,500. Plans also include cross-training space, physical therapy offices and a pro shop.
The foundation says it will hold public meetings to showcase the center’s proposed design and budget in the coming months.
