The projects, part of the redevelopment of Pan Am Plaza block, represent a total investment of $710 million that aims to grow the number and size of conventions the city can host.
Plans for the project were initially announced in 2018. The $200 million convention center expansion will add more than 140,000 square feet of space, including a 50,000-square-foot ballroom.
Crews will also begin construction on the $510 million, 814-room Signia by Hilton hotel on Pan Am Plaza. That project is expected to create more than 400 jobs.
In May, Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett’s administration announced it was taking over financing for the hotel project from Kite Realty Group Trust, which said it couldn’t secure financing. The city was already financing the convention center expansion.
The Indianapolis City-County Council approved the plan the following month.
Visit Indy officials previously told our partners at the IBJ the project will allow the city to retain more than $2 billion in major conventions over the next 10 years.
The expansion and hotel are expected to be complete by the summer of 2026.
The IBJ’s Mickey Shuey will be at the groundbreaking ceremony. We’ll have more on the event in Tuesday’s INside Edge Midday Report.
