Eric Holcomb and Indiana Secretary of Commerce David Rosenberg will join executives from Amazon Web Services for a ceremonial groundbreaking of the company’s $11 billion data center in New Carlisle.
The Monday afternoon event comes nearly six months after the project was first announced.
Officials say the project at the Indiana Enterprise Center will result in at least 1,000 new jobs and represents the largest capital investment in Indiana history.
The data center campus will feature 16 data center “shells,” each of which will be about 200,000 square feet, and sit on an 870-acre property. Eight support buildings are also planned for the campus.
AWS is also expected to invest up to $7 million to support road infrastructure improvements surrounding the development.
Last month, The St. Joseph County Redevelopment Commission, St. Joseph County Commissioners, and St. Joseph County Council approved an incentive package that would provide a net savings of about $1.9 billion for the company.
The council also approved an economic development agreement for the project, which included a “community enhancement agreement” designed to provide benefits to the local area.
The local incentives come in addition to the nearly $150 million in incentives being offered by the Indiana Economic Development Corp. Those incentives are performance-based, meaning the company can only claim them once it has made promised investments.
Our partners at WSBT previously reported the first four buildings are to set for completion by the end of this year with more being added over the next 10-15 years.
We’ll have more on the groundbreaking ceremony in Tuesday’s INside Edge Morning Briefing.
