Subscribe NowGen Con has announced plans to require mask wearing in all indoor and crowded outdoor spaces during its downtown Indianapolis convention next month. Gen Con President David Hoppe says mask wearing will be required for all attendees, exhibitors, event organizers, and staff.
Gen Con, which was previously scheduled for the first weekend in August, was moved to September 16-19 and will feature a hybrid of in-person and virtual events.
Organizers cited the spread of the Delta variant of COVID-19 as a primary reason for the decision.
Organizers say mask wearing will be required unless actively eating or drinking. The convention is also “dropping the option to show proof of vaccination to forgo wearing a mask at Gen Con.”
While it is not yet a policy, organizers say they continue to speak with legal and health partners and may make vaccinations mandatory for attendance.
The convention’s new health and safety measures are listed below:
- Reduced capacity to approximately 60% of normal size
- Increased spacing for all gaming tables in event areas
- Nightly closure of the convention center from midnight to 7 a.m. for cleaning and sanitizing
- New hospital-grade air filtration systems at the convention center
- Contactless doors, faucets, and restrooms at the convention center
- Increased hand sanitizing stations
- More outdoor activations
The convention is planning to share more details as the event date nears.
