Another planned investment from GE Aviation into its new Lafayette facility has received a boost. The Journal & Courier reports the Lafayette City Council has approved tax abatement on the engine manufacturer’s plans to pump $15 million into equipment and create 30 more jobs.

Installation is expected to be complete in 2019. The additional positions are expected to bring the total work force in the Tippecanoe County plant to 230 by 2020. The first group of 30 or so employees started in September and production began at the beginning of the year.

In filings with the city of Lafayette, GE Aviation says more than 9,600 LEAP engines, which are being produced at the facility, have been ordered to-date. The new investment involves maintenance, repair and overhaul of engines made in Lafayette and another plant in North Carolina. Most of the new positions are on the production side and GE says the average salaries for these jobs will be more than $30 per hour.

The company’s commitment to the facility now stands at more than $50 million.
