Citilink has been awarded the grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration to invest in sustainable public transit for the city.
The $10,987,062 grant will go toward the purchase of 12 new electric-hybrid buses, which will replace existing diesel-fueled buses.
“Citilink’s acquisition of electric-hybrid buses marks a significant step towards a more sustainable future for Fort Wayne,” Citilink General Manager and CEO John Metzinger said in a news release. “With the support of this federal grant, the company is poised to enhance its services while minimizing its environmental impact.”
Under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the FTA has awarded more than $5 billion in funding to replace U.S. transit buses over the past three years, 80% of which will operate on zero or low-emission technology.
Citilink was among 477 applicants for FTA grant money, totaling $9 billion in funding requests. The FTA grants ultimately totaled $1.5 billion in this round of awards, and Lafayette was the only other transit agency in the state to receive funding.
