The city said 20% of the 40 new housing units at the development, which will be known as The Landing Exchange, will be considered affordable housing.
The project is being developed by Cincinnati-based The Model Group, which has been involved in the development of The Landing since before construction on the $34 million first phase began in 2018.
The city said in a news release that the project will put Fort Wayne in a better position to meet the housing needs of the community.
“This project will bring affordable housing units, create more residential opportunities and drive additional investment,” said Jonathan Leist, community development division director for the city. “We’re eager to bring the Landing Exchange to life and continue to build on the transformational success of the first two phases of redevelopment of the Landing, one of our city’s most beloved and historic spaces.”
Fort Wayne Mayor Sharon Tucker spoke about the project during a news conference Monday.
The Landing Exchange will be located on the northeast corner of Harrison and Columbia streets, which is currently a surface parking lot.
The Fort Wayne Redevelopment Commission was set to consider an economic development agreement, a pledge of tax increment financing funds to support the project, and a resolution to extend the project area and economic development area for the next 25 years.
Additionally, the city and The Model Group plan to seek state economic development funds for the project. During a news conference, Mayor Tucker touted the city’s partnership with The Model Group for the continued growth of The Landing.
“We know with all that is going on downtown that people want to be in our core of our city, where the activity is happening, and this project brings on units that will be able to meet that need, and we’ll be able to answer the affordable housing concerns that we have,” Tucker said. “We are proud to have good partners with us that are here to meet the needs of both our community and our business partners through housing and mixed-use facilities.”
Pending necessary approvals, the city expects to begin work on The Landing Exchange in early 2025. The project is expected to be complete in the summer of 2026.
