Fort Wayne Council Says No to Amazon Tax Break

The Fort Wayne City Council has voted not to give Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) a $7.3 million tax break for equipment inside a planned fulfillment center on the city’s northwest side. Our partners at WPTA-TV report the council voted five to three to reject the tax abatement request.

The city council already awarded Amazon a $16 million tax abatement for the facility’s construction.

Councilman Russ Jehl, who voted against the incentive, says tax abatements are supposed to encourage companies to invest in Fort Wayne, but Amazon is already committed to the 630,000-square-foot facility.

In April, Amazon confirmed plans to build the fulfillment center, which is expected to create 1,000 full-time jobs. It will be the company’s 10^th fulfillment center in Indiana and the first to use advanced robotics technology.
