When complete, the project will renovate more than 10,000 square feet of concourse area and add 5,000 square feet of first-level space for airport operations.
Chicago-based Clayco Inc. will lead construction on the project, which is slated to begin in May 2023. Senior Vice President and Aviation Business Unit Leader Mac Glinn calls the project “challenging and exciting.”
“We understand that we cannot drive away the traveling public in the process of making these types of improvements; that would undermine the whole purpose of these projects,” Glinn said in a news release. “We look forward to collaborating with the Fort Wayne Airport Authority to minimize impacts to all stakeholders and deliver this facility in a safe, cost effective, high quality, and timely manner.”
As part of the expansion, the airport plans to relocate all airline gates and passenger boarding bridges to the second level, expand the TSA security checkpoint area, relocate the airport restaurant and create a new frequent flyer lounge.
The project also calls for new and improved public areas including additional restrooms, expanded circulation areas, vertical transportation and additional accessible counter spaces.
The airport says Clayco will demolish existing interior and structural components to expand the building outward and vertically over the first floor. Crews also expect to update the existing baggage claim and rental car areas.
The East Terminal Expansion is slated for completion in June 2025.
The expansion is part of the airport’s ongoing Project Gateway effort, which includes the West Terminal Expansion and Rehabilitation project, Parking Lot Rehabilitation Project, and Renewable Solar Energy project, among others.
In September, the airport unveiled new passenger areas as part of the West Terminal Expansion effort. Last month, the airport’s improved Terminal Drive was reopened, allowing people to once again stop curbside to drop-off and pick-up passengers.
