Former Greenwood School Set For Demolition

Subscribe NowDemolition is set for the former Greenwood Middle School as part of the city’s downtown revitalization effort. The Greenwood Redevelopment Commission has awarded a $1.7 million contract for the demolition, which is expected to take about six months to complete.
The city acquired the 19-acre property in 2017, but needed approval from the RDC before work could begin. The gymnasium at the school will not be demolished, but rather repurposed as a new downtown fieldhouse.
"Our city’s core is literally transforming before our eyes," said Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers. "Being born and raised in Greenwood and having lived here nearly my entire life, I could not be more proud of the progress our city is making toward future prosperity."
The city has several projects planned to take place on or near the school property, including residential space featuring more than 450 apartments and 130 townhomes, 75,000 square feet of retail and office space, nearly 10 acres of new or upgraded open space and nearly 2 miles of new or reconstructed streetscape. The city says Myers and other officials are continuing discussions with private developers to finalize plans.
"Our plans for the future of downtown envision a thriving city core with easy walkability, dynamic public gathering spaces and connectivity to trails, parks and other public assets," said Myers. “We’ll have diverse, authentic amenities, seamless integration of green space and opportunities for all ages to live, work and play in downtown Greenwood."
