Brown Power Plant in Evansville will be going up for auction beginning this week. The auction will help make way for CenterPoint Energy’s plans to establish a natural gas turbine facility on the site.
The auction is being handled by Holland Industrial Group, an asset recovery company headquartered in Florida. The company said the assets available for auction have a multimillion-dollar recovery value.
The equipment going up for auction includes transformers, generators and compressors. However, CenterPoint notes that the facility itself is not going up for auction, only the equipment.
“The auction at A.B. Brown power plant is a significant event for buyers seeking high-quality industrial equipment. It presents a unique chance to acquire well-maintained machinery and components from a major power facility” said Alex Holland, senior vice president of Holland Industrial Group. “This auction includes a variety of equipment, from large turbines and transformers to smaller mechanical components, catering to diverse industrial needs.”
Inspections of the equipment will be available Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and lots open for bidding on Wednesday at 10 a.m. The auction is split into two lots, which will close July 17 and 18 at 10 a.m. each day, respectively.
The A.B. Brown plant ceased its coal-fired operations in October. In June 2022, CenterPoint earned approval from the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission to build the two natural gas turbines at the site.
A spokesperson for CenterPoint said the natural gas turbines are expected to be operational in 2025.
“These turbines, along with a solar project also being constructed in Posey County, will eventually replace portions of our existing coal-fired generation fleet and are a part of our long-term generation transition plan,” the spokesperson said in an email to Inside INdiana Business. “The plan seeks to significantly change the way we generate power and deliver a cost-effective, well-balanced energy mix for our customers in southwestern Indiana.”
