The Melvin and Vickie Jensen Nature Preserve and Trails was formally dedicated Tuesday. The 75-acre space features several miles of public trails that used to be part of Melvin’s farm property.
The space is part of a new 200-acre regional park that will be adjacent to Novaparke Innovation & Technology Campus in Georgetown.
The park will be named the Robert “Bob” Lane Jr. Regional Park in memory of the former director of the New Albany Floyd County Parks Department.
“I think we’re seeing perhaps the beginning of a generational shift in thinking here in Floyd County. For so many years, this was rightfully farmland,” said Floyd County Commissioner Al Knable said. It’s about “recognizing that land has other uses other than building. What we’re seeing here is a work of beauty in progress.”
When completed, the park will feature sports facilities, additional trails, agricultural activities and more.
The preserve is located at 1430 N Tucker Road in Georgetown.
