The city says construction crews, demolition and site preparations are in place for work to get underway Monday.
The new facility is scheduled to be completed in spring 2024.
Earlier this year, plans were unveiled for the new $23 million Arts & Municipal Complex. The three-story facility will feature dedicated exhibit, performance and gathering spaces, as well as city administration offices and conference rooms.
City officials cite engineering reports, which estimated the existing city hall building would need millions of dollars in repairs due to foundational and mechanical failures, as the catalyst for the project. In a press release, the city later said the building’s foundation issues were irreparable, resulting in building failures.
The city says bricks and limestone from the original building will be preserved and incorporated into the new building and hardscape.
Demolition work, which will occur on Monday and Tuesday, is open to the public.
