Evansville school inches closer to top of ‘Best High Schools’ ranking

U.S. News & World Report is out with its annual list of “Best U.S. High Schools” and one Hoosier school is moving ever so closer to the top spot. The publication says this year’s ranking showcases “schools whose students demonstrate outstanding outcomes, surpassing the anticipated benchmarks, including achieving high graduation rates.”

Nearly 18,000 schools were evaluated at the national, state and local levels. On the national ranking, the schools included had students who achieved exceptional scores on state assessments for math, reading and science.

“These schools also had strong underserved student performance, college readiness, curriculum breadth, as well as graduation rates,” the publication said in a news release on Tuesday.

Signature School in Evansville is the only Indiana high school included in the top 100 on the national ranking at No. 2, up one spot from last year’s list.

Only The Early College at Guilford in North Carolina ranked higher on the 2023 ranking. The school saw a huge jump after being ranked No. 35 in 2022.

The schools were also ranked within their own states. Over 300 Indiana schools made the statewide list in 2023, including:

4. West Lafayette Jr./Sr. High School – West Lafayette
5. Zionsville Community High School – Zionsville
6. Carmel High School – Carmel
7. Herron High School – Indianapolis
8. Westfield High School – Westfield
9. Munster High School – Munster
10. Burris Laboratory School – Muncie
11. Fishers High School – Fishers
12. Brownsburg High School – Brownsburg
13. Hamilton Southeastern High School – Fishers
14. Carroll High School – Fort Wayne
15. Homestead Senior High School – Fort Wayne
16. Heritage Hills High School – Lincoln City (Spencer County)
17. Valparaiso high School – Valparaiso
18. Bloomington High School South – Bloomington
19. Washington Township Middle/High School – Valparaiso
20. Noblesville High School – Noblesville
21. Plainfield High School – Plainfield
22. Penn High School – Mishawaka
23. Bloomington High School North – Bloomington
24. Yorktown High School – Yorktown
25. Avon High School – Avon
26. Cascade Senior High School – Clayton
27. Floyd Central High School – Floyd Knobs
