The public park will consist of a concrete skatepark situated along the riverfront in downtown Evansville and will connect to Micky’s Kingdom Playground.
The park’s design renderings were created by Hunger Skateparks, which also developed the plans for the city of Greenwood’s 25-year-old Northeast Park skatepark.
The city says the project, which was first announced last year, incorporates features requested during a public input meeting held in March. Design updates include a new manual pad design and redesigned ledges that now include out and ride-on options, as well as an Amoeba Bowl and a reconfigured bike zone.
“Sunset Skatepark will be located between Mickey’s Kingdom and the Evansville Water & Sewer Utility Sunrise Pump Station,” said Deputy Mayor and interim Director of Parks & Recreation Department Steve Schaefer. “By this time next year, a section of our Riverfront will be completely transformed into a public space where residents can ride, play, relax and learn.”
The city says rain gardens have also been added to the park’s design, which will help mitigate stormwater runoff.
“When completed, Evansville will be home to one of the largest and most diverse skateparks in our state,” said Mayor Lloyd Winnecke.
Construction is expected to kick-off this fall.
