DePauw to Host High School Ethics Bowl

Subscribe NowGroups of students from throughout the country are in Greencastle this week for the Summer High School Ethics Bowl Invitational. The three-day event, being held at the Prindle Institute for Ethics at DePauw University, features a debate-style competition focusing on contemporary moral problems.
Sixteen teams will be competing in the event, including a team from South Putnam High School in Greencastle. Judging in the competition will focus on constructing a well-reasoned argument in a civil manner.
According to the Prindle Institute, the teams will discuss cases involving questions such as whether it’s morally permissible for countries to withhold humanitarian aid, is there moral value to a human corpse, it is okay to take selfies at sites associated with evil, and should artificial intelligence be used to predict hospital patient deaths.
"In today’s cultural and political climate, the notion of what is ethical is under intense scrutiny," Andrew Cullison, director of the Prindle Institute said in a news release. "As a result, rather than giving our young people sets of rules, we need to equip them to process different perspectives, engage in open dialogue and arrive at conclusions that are, truly, ethical."

- Dardanelle High School, Dardanelle, AR
- Eastern Alamance High School, Mebane, NC
- Future School of Fort Smith, Fort Smith, AR
- Green Hope High School, Cary, NC
- Hilliard Davidson High School, Hilliard, OH
- Noble and Greenough School, Dedham, MA
- Polytechnic School, Pasadena, CA
- South Putnam High School, Greencastle, IN
- Trumbull High School, Trumbull, CT
