Demolition Begins on Greenwood Middle School

Subscribe NowThe City of Greenwood has officially begun structural demolition of the former Greenwood Middle School. The city announced late last year that the property’s north gymnasium will be repurposed as a fieldhouse downtown.
Greenwood purchased the 19-acre property in 2017, and announced the demolition in January.
The demolition is not expected to last longer than three months.
Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers says the project represents a major milestone in the city’s efforts to revamp its downtown, known locally as Old Town Greenwood.
Current and future projects planned for in and around the former middle school property include:
• Proposed construction of 450+ apartments and 130+ townhomes
• 75,000+ square feet of potential retail/office space
• 9 acres of new or upgraded open space
• 9 miles of new or reconstructed streetscape
“Our plans for the future of downtown envision a thriving city core with easy walkability, dynamic public gathering spaces and connectivity to trails, parks and other public assets,” said Myers in a news release. “We’ll have diverse, authentic amenities, seamless integration of green space and opportunities for all ages to live, work and play in downtown Greenwood.
