Officials in Posey and Wells counties have launched crowdfunding campaigns to support two community-based projects. If their respective goals are reached, the projects will receiving matching funds from the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority.

The first campaign was launched by Newlife Rescue & Adoption Center to fund a new community animal adoption center in Posey County.

Newlife is a not-for-profit created through the merger of the Posey Humane Society and Posey County Pound Puppies. The organization said a new shelter will allow it to more effectively provide services and create a space where residents can interact with the animals.

“Posey County will finally have a building that is truly designed to house animals,” said Lucy Steinhart, building campaign coordinator for Newlife. “This is a progressive step for our county, not just for the animals we assist but also for the community members dedicated to this mission. Our new shelter will enable us to meet the region’s needs more effectively and efficiently.”

Newlife also has a $50,000 goal for its campaign, which will end on Jan. 19. The organization has raised more than $22,000 to date.

The second campaign, launched by Wells County Trails, will support the development of a new paddlesports launch site on the Wabash River near the town of Vera Cruz.

The project will create a new point from which canoers and kayakers can enter the Wabash River. The space sits between two existing launch sites in Linn Grove and Bluffton.

“With kayaking and paddlesports on a rise in Wells County now is a great time to help open more opportunities up to the public,” the not-for-profit said on its Patronicity page.

Wells County Trails, along with Wells County Revitalization Inc. and the town of Vera Cruz, are looking to raise $50,000 by Jan. 11. The campaign has raised more than $11,000 to date.

The IHCDA is set to match the funding for each project if they reach the fundraising goals by their respective deadlines. The matching funds come from the agency’s CreatINg Places program, which is open to not-for-profit organizations and government entities for projects with a minimum development cost of $10,000.
