Mayor Todd Barton says the change to Crawfordsville Regional Airport "better reflected this regional economic development asset."
Barton says the former Crawfordsville Municipal Airport has been "connecting communities to statewide and national markets for a few years now," so the change made sense.
The airport has come a long way since 1944, when the city established the facility on a 151-acre farm with no runways. Since then, it has added a runway, hangars, aviation fuel tanks and several taxiways. Over the years, airport also made improvements to allow it to serve large corporate jets, rather than just small propeller-driven planes.
The city pegs the airport’s local economic impact at $80 million per year, supporting more than 250 local jobs. Last month, the airport named Lori Curless manager of the airport.
