The 10,000-square-foot terminal will replace the existing facility that is more than 60 years old and will be operated by Tri-State Aero, a subsidiary of Evansville-based United Companies.
The Evansville-Vanderburgh Airport Authority District is overseeing the construction of the terminal, which will cost nearly $7.5 million.
Tri-State Aero officials told our partners at WEHT-TV that the existing facility will be demolished and turned into parking and ramp space.
Doug Pettit, president of Tri-State Aero, told Inside INdiana Business the company’s commitment to the project will come in the form of a “significant increase” in rent to help cover the long-term costs of the building.
“The airport authority and TSA are partners and both are making significant investments in an effort to substantially upgrade the ‘front door’ to the community for many people,” Pettit said in an email to IIB. “The existing building is at least 60 years old and doesn’t adequately represent our community. This will be a wonderful upgrade.”
Tri-State Aero was acquired by United Companies in the fall of 2022. The company is the only fixed base operator serving the Evansville Regional Airport.
About 35 employees currently work at the existing terminal, and Pettit said he expects to add up to five jobs to manage the new building and the business it expects to attract.
Construction is expected to be completed by the end of this summer.
