The Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering will create a new computer science department with specializations in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, ethics and social impact of technology and entrepreneurship and innovation.
“The new Department of Computer Science will capitalize on IU’s multidisciplinary research to offer novel solutions and catalyze collaboration among faculty, industry, governmental agencies and communities,” Joanna Millunchick, dean of the Luddy School, said in a news release. “Students will have access to robust interdisciplinary research experiences and industry leaders that will equip them for success in the workplace and drive innovation that improves lives.”
The university hopes the new expansion will better prepare students to enter the industry by earning stackable credentials and certifications. IU said it’s part of its commitment to double the Luddy School’s enrollment and investing in STEM faculty and research.
The move also doubles down on the university’s commitment to growing the workforce in the state. The university reports that 83% of Indianapolis’ Luddy students stay in state.
The new department is scheduled to open in the fall 2024 semester. It’s at that time when IU and Purdue University are expected to begin their separate operations in Indy. Earlier this year, the universities officially agreed to separate IUPUI into two independent campuses.
The school will hold a “Bridge Week,” which is an opportunity to acclimate new students and ensure students are placed in the correct courses through an assessment.
