Mitch Whaley’s remarks came during the recent groundbreaking of the $62.5 million Health Professions Building, which will bring most of university’s students in health-related fields under the same roof. In an interview last year with Inside INdiana Business Television, Whaley discussed how these students traditionally have been "prepared, essentially, in silos."
Whaley says these close collaborations will benefit students, patients and employers. "In this environment, students from our different health disciplines will learn about, from, and with one other. This will prepare them to enter the workplace as members of collaborative practice teams," he said. "This kind of collaboration creates a more unified, less fragmented health care system that improves the overall quality of patient care. The marketplace has a critical need for this kind of skilled, adaptable professional – clinically knowledgeable, adept at critical thinking and problem solving, and devoted to high quality patient care."
Details of the facility were announced in 2015. Construction is expected to be complete in 2019.
