CenterPoint Energy — which serves more than 630,000 customers in nearly 50 Indiana counties — has announced that it is projecting a 15% decrease in natural gas costs compared to last winter, assuming weather is normal for the season.
NIPSCO, which serves much of northern Indiana, projected similarly lower bills in a recent news release.
Utility companies say their estimates come from a stabilization of the natural gas market after more volatile prices last year.
CenterPoint officials say their customers can expect to pay about $100 a month on average between November and March. Last year, costs during the same 5-month period averaged about $125 per month.
“With the decrease in natural gas prices, assuming our region experiences normal weather this heating season, customers should expect a notable decrease in their bills compared to last season,” said Ashley Babcock, vice president of CenterPoint’s Indiana and Ohio Gas operations, in a company news release. “However, we recognize some customers might still face financial hardship this heating season, and we want to encourage them to contact us for options to assist in managing costs prior to their first bill of the heating season.”
CenterPoint offers multiple payment assistance programs and bill budgeting tools. More information can be found on the company’s website at centerpointenergy.com.
