WalletHub says it compared more than 1,300 cities across 45 metrics, including median household income, population growth, and school system quality.
The list looks at cities with populations 25,000 and 100,000.
“We also know that people have choices about where they want to live as our high-tech economy has made it possible to live in one city while working in another,” Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said in a news release. “We work hard on our quality of life focused on the arts and entertainment to attract those highly coveted employees. Our strategy is working.”
A total 33 cities made the list. While not specifically ranked, the cities of Westfield and Fishers are the only other Hoosier cities to be listed among the top 10 at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
Gary and East Chicago are the lowest rated Indiana cities on the list.
WalletHub’s list also includes several sub-categories. Among them, Granger had the second-highest homeownership rate. Meanwhile, West Lafayette had the highest percentage of population in poverty, was among the lowest for income growth, and was ranked fourth-lowest for average weekly work hours.
Carmel is followed by Lexington, Massachusetts, and Brentwood Tennessee at the top of the list.
