The new addition will be named Founder’s College, honoring Ovid Butler, a lawyer who fought for higher education access.
Butler announced in November that the two-year college is being created to expand access to students from historically underserved communities and increase affordability. Through Founder’s College, the university said students can obtain an associate degree at little or no cost and complete their bachelor’s degree at Butler for about $10,000.
“We want to ensure that Founder’s College students not only have access to education beyond high school, but are also given the support needed to be successful in college, get good-paying jobs, develop meaningful careers, and to be engaged members of their communities,” Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Brooke Barnett said in a news release.
The university is currently conducting a national search for the college’s inaugural dean and other leadership positions. Other faculty and staff hiring will begin later this year.
The initial associate degree programs will be announced this summer. Admissions will open in August 2024, and the first class will begin in August 2025.
