Major maintenance work is underway at the BP Whiting Refinery and the work is creating hundreds of new jobs. The London-based energy company has shut down a fluidic catalytic cracking unit for planned upgrades at the largest refinery in the Midwest.

Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report the “cat cracker” converts the hydrocarbon fractions of crude oil into gasoline and other fuel products.

The paper says BP also continues work on a new $300 million naptha hydrotreater, a system used to reduce sulfur levels in the production of gasoline.

About 250 construction workers are working on that project, according to the publication.
