The closure marked the end of the brewery’s tumultuous final years that included layoffs, the cancellation of a community investment round and uncertainty in its kitchen.
Despite its recent woes, the company has tried to align itself with community causes over its tenure at 419 N. Walnut St. In 2021, the brewery announced tipping is optional because it raised prices to offer employees a stable livable wage. Switchyard held charitable events for local not-for-profits, blood drives and animal shelters. The Switchyard logo was also a mainstay at Bloomington markets and festivals.
“As we say goodbye, we remind you of the importance of supporting local, independent businesses,” the company said on Facebook. “While not the ending we envisioned, we’re proud of our impact on the community we’ve served.”
In a post Saturday morning, the bar-restaurant told its patrons, nicknamed “Switchyardigans,” they could come in the next day for a final beer and pizza slice.
Community members on social media talked about their favorite beers, memories and events at Switchyard. However, a sizable crowd commented the closure was a long time coming.
At the time of publication, it is unclear whether the brewery’s canning operation will cease.
Those with gift cards can receive a refund on the Switchyard website, starting sometime Monday.
