It is the first case of the avian flu reported to the board since May of last year.
The farm, which had a flock of more than 13,000 birds, tested positive early last week, and the test was confirmed positive on Friday by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory.
According to the board’s current case list for the avian flu, the Daviess County farm has been depopulated as a result of the positive test.
In response, the board has established a 10-kilometer control area around the farm. The control area lies entirely within Daviess County and includes 45 commercial flocks and 48 hobby/backyard flocks.
Additionally, a 20-kilometer surveillance zone, which includes 56 commercial flocks, has been established, covering portions of Daviess, Martin and Green counties.
Indiana’s last case of highly pathogenic avian influenza was reported May 5, 2023 in a non-commercial turkey flock in Posey County. The last case of the avian flu in a commercial flock was reported in December 2022 on a turkey farm also in Daviess County.
A total of 16 avian flu cases were reported in Indiana in 2022. Nationally, outbreaks of the avian flu caused a rise in prices for poultry products, particularly eggs and turkey.
