AstraZeneca Makes Global Connections From Posey County

In a video from the Economic Development Coalition of Southwest Indiana profiling the AstraZeneca PLC manufacturing and distribution operation in Mount Vernon, Tanya Harris says about half of the products from the facility are exported throughout the world. The operation was acquired by AstraZeneca in late 2015 in a more than $3 billion deal for the global diabetes business of New York-based Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. (NYSE: BMY). Harris says the company has a "very diverse and complex business" in the southwest corner of the state.
The Economic Development Coalition says AstraZeneca has about 680 workers in Mount Vernon, making it one of the county’s largest employers. The facility is considered AstraZeneca’s largest in the U.S.
Harris told Economic Development Coalition of Southwest Indiana Chief Executive Officer Greg Wathen the region’s workforce is "committed, really beyond what I’ve seen elsewhere across the country and even across the globe." She adds AstraZeneca’s talent attraction and retention efforts in Mount Vernon include a scholarship program for students in STEM fields that has led to internships and jobs, as well as a company-wide internship program that can help import talent to the Indiana facility and showcase existing talent to the rest of the world.
Harris says the company is in "growth mode" in southwest Indiana, adding more than 100 employees since taking on the facility three years ago.
