The facility will be in the AmeriPlex at the Port business park north of Interstate 94 and south of the Ports of Indiana-Burns Harbor on Lake Michigan.
The center will hire at least 10 people who make at least $100,000 per year. A timeline for the facility’s opening was not provided.
“It’s not as many jobs as an Amazon warehouse, but they’re high-paying jobs,” Portage Mayor Sue Lynch told the Times. “These are the technology jobs we’ve been working to bring more of to Portage.”
Amazon was offered tax breaks for its $35 million building and $52 million worth of IT equipment; over the next 10 years, the company will pay $7.5 million in property taxes.
The company is no stranger to northwest Indiana; a 190,000-square-foot Amazon delivery center is located at the AmeriPlex at the Crossroads business park in Merrillville.
