The 100,000 square-foot hospital, located on the Memorial Hospital campus, will serve families in 15 counties in Indiana and Michigan.
The hospital includes a Pediatrics Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Unit. It also features a new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit model in which mothers will be allowed to stay in the same room with their baby regardless of how sick or premature the baby is.
"Already, our new NICU has drawn the attention of pediatric specialists around the world," said Phil Newbold, chief executive officer of Beacon Health System. "Our team believes high-risk babies will have fewer complications and a shorter length of stay as the result of the increased contact between parents and their babies in the first hours of life."
The health system says patient families had a hand in the design and planning of the playrooms, lounges and gathering areas in the new building. Patients will begin moving into the new hospital next week.
The former pediatrics space inside Memorial Hospital will be repurposed to cover additional needs for adult care.
