The club says it will field a women’s senior team in the USL W League, a pre-professional soccer league that will launch next year with at least 30 teams in its inaugural season.
The Indy Eleven says details about the women’s team, including name, logo, home venue, training locations and staffing, will be announced at later dates.
“Indy Eleven has long desired to take a tangible step towards representation in the women’s game, and we are proud to partner with the United Soccer League and the W League to make that a reality,” Indy Eleven Chief Executive Officer Greg Stremlaw said in a news release. “Indy Eleven is eager to do our part in growing women’s soccer here in Indiana and, just as is the case with our USL Championship team, fulfilling our aim to be the premier club in the USL W League both on and off the field starting in 2022.”
The W League, which was originally announced in June, currently has 17 teams committed for the first season. The announcement of Indy Eleven’s involvement comes just days after the USL announced the Super League, a professional Division II women’s soccer league, which will have its inaugural season in 2023.
